What Is MRSA?

MRSA short for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterial staph infection dubbed by the media a superbug because of its resistance to commonly prescribed antibiotics including methicillin, oxacillin, penicillin, and amoxicillin. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), MRSA bacteria is present in only about one percent of the population; and while just carrying the bacteria, termed colonization, does not mean an individual will become ill, they can still pass it to others who may develop the more serious, and potentially fatal, surgical wound/skin infections, bloodstream infections, or pneumonia.

What Is Community-Associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) and How Does It Differ from MRSA?

MRSA is most often seen in people in hospitals and healthcare centers who have weakened immune systems. However, in the 1990s, it began appearing in the general public. According to the CDC, MRSA infections that are acquired by persons who have not been recently (within the past year) hospitalized or had a medical procedure (such as dialysis, surgery, catheters) are know [sic] as CA-MRSA infections.

MRSA and Cosmetic Procedures

So how does the risk of MRSA and CA-MRSA relate specifically to those considering plastic surgery? The main reason that cosmetic patients need to be concerned about MRSA is that having a fresh incision makes one more susceptible to contracting an infection. And while many safe, clean plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery facilities maintain a sterile environment and might have a low rate of any type of post-op infection, most plastic procedures are outpatient, which means patients return home, and into the community, the same day as their surgeries. Consequently, the responsibility for protecting against infection rests predominantly on the patients themselves.

Dr. Shah s Tips for Preventing MRSA

So what are the most effective measures patients can take toward prevention? Compiled from materials distributed by the Mayo Clinic and the CDC, Bakersfield plastic surgeon Dr. Shah tailors his tips specifically to protecting patients from MRSA following plastic surgery.

Prior to your procedure:

Prepare your place before surgery. Clean your home thoroughly prior to your surgery by wiping down all surfaces with a cleaning solution that states explicitly on the label that it kills methicillin-resistant Staph aureus, such Mr. Clean Antibacterial Multi-Surface spray or StaphAseptic (www.StaphASeptic.com). This means you ll return home to safe surroundings and eliminate the need to wipe away (and come into contact with) germs when your incisions are at their most vulnerable.

Sanitize towels and bedding. Wash all linens directly before your procedure, so only clean cloths will be near your fresh incisions. Continue to cleanse towels, bedding, and clothing frequently for a month post op, washing and drying on hot (and adding bleach, ideally).

For the first MONTH post op:

Keep hands clean. Wash hands regularly with soap and water, particularly after returning home or touching shared surfaces: Scrub thoroughly for a minimum of 15 seconds, then dry with a non-reusable towel (such as a paper towel), and turn off faucet using a fresh sheet. Of course, remember to always wash your hands before touching your incisions!

Keep incisions clean and covered. Since recent wounds allow easy entry for MRSA and other bacterial infections, the most important protective pointer is to make sure your incision(s) are clean and covered at all times, using simple soap and water; then wrapping with a fresh, dry bandage; and even still, avoiding skin-to-skin contact as much as possible. Remember, moisture creates an ideal environment for bacteria to grow; so keep your incisions as dry as possible.

Pack Purell (and pass it around!) When out and about, carry a bottle of hand sanitizer in case you get caught without the ability to wash. At home, give each family member a bottle of their own, so they can avoid passing potentially dangerous bacteria on to you.

Shun the sharing of personal items. Since MRSA can be spread via contaminated items as well as direct contact, it s crucial that you not share anything that touches your incisions until they are completely healed, including towels, razors, sheets and blankets, and clothing. Because CA-MRSA is contagious in the community at large, anyone no matter how hygienic is a potential carrier and can potentially pass it along to you!

Keep yourself clean. The cleaner your body in general, the less likely bacteria is to find its way into your wound(s). Therefore, for the month following your surgery, make certain you shower (with soap) regularly, particularly after public outings or exercise.

Avoid breeding-grounds for bacteria. Because certain places like schools, hospitals, gyms, and jails are known for being ripe with bacteria (including MRSA), try your best to stay away until you are fully healed. If absolutely unavoidable, make sure your incisions are well bandaged and covered with clothing.

Watch for warning signs of MRSA. Keep an eye on your incision(s), and call your surgeon immediately if you observe an increase in redness, swelling, or tenderness, or if you develop any oozing, drainage, or a fever.

What if I Become Infected Is MRSA Treatable?

Yes; MRSA can be remedied with certain antibiotics or treating/draining the infected abscess or boil itself.

So while MRSA does have the potential to be life threatening, all sources seem to come to the same conclusion: Patients like you play an integral role in staying safe. MRSA is a serious issue, but one that can be controlled by understanding transmission and practicing some relatively simple precautions.

In the past, advanced spinal conditions almost always meant extensive, open-back surgery. Often called traditional back surgery , these procedures were used to treat everything from a ruptured disc to spinal stenosis.

Open-back surgeries are incredibly invasive and traumatic, cutting through the muscle tissue of the back to reach and oftentimes remove parts of the spine. Recovery times are known to take as long as a year, and a full recovery of the muscles in the back is highly improbable.

Luckily, outpatient surgical centers offer cutting-edge minimally invasive outpatient surgeries that can help set you on the path toward a healthy spine with a minimum of downtime.

How does it work?

Outpatient spinal surgery centers perform what are known as endoscopic surgeries. Endoscopic surgeries are performed via a tiny camera and tube called an endoscope. A laser is attached to the endoscope to allow surgeons to remove troublesome parts of discs or spine.

The equipment allows professionals to reach the spine through a much smaller incision than traditional open back surgery. Whereas the open -back surgery incisions alone can take up to two weeks to heal, endoscopic spinal surgery is typically an outpatient procedure.

Use of an endoscope allows access to the spine without the need to cut through the muscles of the back, making the extensive physical therapy associated with open back surgery a thing of the past.

Conditions Treated Via Endoscopic Surgeries

These centers offer a number of different treatments for many spinal conditions including spinal stenosis, herniated or bulging discs and other spinal conditions. A few of the procedures available include:

Endoscopic discectomy a laser-assisted surgery that removes bulging or damaged portions of the spine s intervertebral discs.

Foraminotomy- an endoscopic procedure that opens up the spinal canal to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and protruding nerve roots.

Laminotomy- this procedure relieves the pressure on pinched nerve roots.

And many more

The Treatment Process

The quest to end your debilitating back pain should always begin at one place, your primary care physician s office. Only your physician can accurately diagnose what is causing your back pain and set you on a course to fix it. Your physician should give you a regimen of conservative treatment options to try before recommending any surgery. A few conservative methods that have helped other back pain sufferers find relief are pain medicine, stretching, inversion boards, a change in lifestyle (e.g. cutting down on junk food, alcohol and tobacco use), and exercise geared toward strengthening your back and core muscles.

If after several months you are gaining no relief from your symptoms, surgery may be an option. Always research your choice of ambulatory endoscopic surgery center.

Spinal surgery is an important and personal step. Try to find one that believes in a patient first philosophy, potentially providing patients with a designated representative who will walk them through the entire process from initial consultation through recovery.

Try to find Experts

Give their web site an once-over. Look for accreditations from the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care.

Do they explain that all surgery should be used as a last resort after conservative methods have failed to provide relief? If the center you are researching is attempting to give you a hard sell on surgery, you should look elsewhere.

Check off-site reviews and customer satisfaction ratings. In the age of the internet, people are readily vocal about their experiences with any given business. If the center is poorly rated, try somewhere else.

However, if the endoscopic surgery center you are researching appears to be a trusted source of excellent patient care, do not hesitate to set up a consultation.

If you have been involved in industrial production in any shape or form since the 1940s, you have heard about the process called plastic injection molding. Service of this type increasingly became common as a result of the technological advances made during World War II. Increased demand by the public for manufactured goods made inexpensively and quickly also affected the need to come up with more efficient production methods. The response from James W. Hendry (1921-2014) in 1946 was the screw plastic injection molding machine.

What Is Plastic Insert Molding?

A plastic injection molding service is a company or supplier that takes several different components (They can be made of metal, ceramic or plastic.), lines them up in a set pattern in a specifically designed molding cavity and inject them with a thermoplastic substance. The result is a new, strong, single unit.

Why Choose an Injection Insert Molding Service?

Companies have long preferred to employ an injection insert molding service in the manufacturing process for several reasons. Among the most stated motives are the following:

* It results in decreased labor and assembly costs when compared to the alternative methods of soldering or employing adhesives or fasteners* Everything can be molded in a single action rather than in several actions* The material required results in a savings over material costs because the amount is less. An injection insert molding service does not need as much or as heavy an amount of joining or adhesive material because the plastic addition eliminates the need for other fasteners and other devices required for attachment.* The resultant product is stronger due to the co-joining of the plastic and the various components* The resulting item is more reliable since the injection insert molding service ensures the parts are fixed firmly in the proper position. This is particularly important when it comes to medical devices and electrical units. They need to be highly resistant to shock and vibrations* The process allows for companies to have flexibility in design. They are able to combine various materials and create diverse configurations as required.* In the procedure, you can employ recycled materials such as plastic pellets with greater ease.

Companies have also found that it is inexpensive to retool. Conversion is easy with the resultant savings, including the use of recycled plastic pellets. Is it any wonder there are many companies out there willing to help you get started and/or supply you with their plastic injection molding service.

Finding the Right Plastic Injection Insert Molding Service

There are many different companies that offer you a plastic injection molding service. Be sure to check their credentials. Talk to those who have used their services and be sure to obtain samples of their work. Visit the company and be sure to see the products in action. The construction and mold design of the product is extremely important when dealing with insert moldings. Only after you have ascertained that the company is credible, reputable and delivers a quality product on time should you agree to work with them.

If you are seeking out a high quality, reliable plastic injection molding service, be sure to talk to the professionals at Aberdeen Technologies Inc. They can help you with a diversity that is known in the business. From helping you with your own designs to supplying you with products from their own molding operations performed in their GMP-compliant cleanroom, their team of experts can help you find the answers and/or the right molds. How To Prepare For Rhinoplasty}

How to Prepare for Rhinoplasty

by

Dr. Jay CalvertIf you have been considering rhinoplasty in order to permanently alter the shape and size of your nose, there are a few tips you should follow to get the best results money can buy. The secret to the best rhinoplasty is to prepare yourself well, find the best surgeon specializing in rhinoplasty and to follow his or her instructions to the letter. The best surgeons will tell you to prepare yourself well for surgery. That entails making yourself as healthy as you possibly can before your operation. If you are a smoker, most surgeons will not operate on you. That means you have to quit. It is a sacrifice well worth the effort if you are serious about your health and your appearance. While your surgeon will give you specific advice, a few tips for preparing yourself for surgery are well known. Stop taking over the counter medications at least six weeks before your operation. That includes aspirin and ibuprofen, as both of these medications can lead to thinning of the blood. Drinking alcoholic beverages is also strongly discouraged at least 24 to 48 hours before surgery. Alcohol can interfere with anesthesia and thin the blood. Be sure to tell your surgeon well in advance about all medications you are taking. Drinking plenty of water will help with post-operative nausea, though your surgeon will tell you to fast from midnight to the time of your surgery. Beyond preparing yourself for surgery physically, you should also do plenty of research about your chosen surgeon. You should only utilize a surgeon who is board certified and fully credentialed. A surgeon who participates in continuing education is a surgeon who is up on all the latest techniques and safety measures. Be sure to ask you surgeon if he participates in continued education such as seminars and classes. Another excellent indication of a good surgeon is his or her references. Word of mouth is generally reliable. Only a surgeon who has a keen eye for what looks best with your face, as well as respects your wishes should be given your business. When preparing yourself for your rhinoplasty, remember that your health, desires and safety come first. Consider having rhinoplasty in Los Angeles.
